Nearly 90% of the 4 billion cases of diarrhoea that occur globally each year are a consequence of unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. It results in the death of 1.8 million people, mostly children under 5 years old. The World Health Organisation estimates that 94% of these illnesses are preventable through the application of affordable, appropriate technology, and better health education (2007).
